Township Forum closing down

Eagle, I could not agree with you more, nor could I have stated it more eloquently!
I've been a "lurker", but a daily reader. In addition to the invaluable advice/tips I've received, I've also been impressed and gratified by the level of literacy, humor, compassion, and character of so many of the participants. I saw the obvious fondness people felt for each other. The camaraderie is incredible, and warmed the cockles of my heart!
I suspect the same people will be on the new "forum". I hope so.

C’est la vie. Township has changed a lot and was no longer fun but a grueling chore for me. I believe what pushed me over the edge was the deceptive advertising that Township felt compelled to incorporate in order to gain interest in the game. One can say that “they all do it”. No, they don’t. Just the greedy ones. Don’t be afraid of “letting go”. I did several years ago from Township and I couldn’t be happier about that choice. Maybe the closing of this forum will be a reality check for some and decide it’s time to “jump ship.”

Why is it closing and becoming read only? Are they trying to save on payroll for a few possible paid moderators or something? Are they just trying to shove us all into a singular platform that better serves as an advertising piece?

Eh.. I dislike advertising my hobbies on Facebook -_-. This site is a separate avenue for me to secretly engage with a community I share a hobby with. So Lame..

confused. is it closed or not? also, does anyone know what happened with the other one?

If I'm correct, it orginally said April and then was changed to June. But....I am also wondering what happened to the "unofficial" site as well.

You are correct it did say April 25. I know...because I didn't know it changed and had to scramble to find my posts in a couple groups and update them with the new date. :)

I for one and happy about the extension...gives a bit more time to transfer some of the fun posts and informative ones over to the "Unofficial Township" forum. :cool:

It did say April and Anna changed it to July.

In the unnoficial forum, they did put up a notice explaining they would be doing maintenance and not to worry.

Excellent! So, not only am I not having a twilight zone moment, my observation skills aren't in need of service either. Good to know lol. I'm glad it's been extended a little bit. I would have missed having no forum to visit for game stuff (since people I know personally are not interested in that conversation).

Dear friends, I understand very well that you want to talk about 'certain situations elsewhere'.
Please keep the following in mind: promoting non-Playrix communities is against the rules of this Forum(nr. 12).
And even with the announced closure of this Forum, it is only respectful to follow those rules.

The fact that Anna / Dreadnought have placed a referring link in the first post of both threads is therefore very generous of them!
So please show your appreciation for this IMO unique gift.

You could imagine this as the milkman who stops selling cheese and soon willl only sell butter, both milk products, but slightly different.
There are regular customers who would still like to buy cheese. They have acquaintance on a new cheese farmer so they ask the milkman if he wants to advertise for this starting milkman so their fellow customers can visit the newbee too.

The milkman understands his customers and places a small poster with the details of the other milkman on his shop window knowing the change of products will be next Friday .
But by circumstances the switch from cheese to butter gets a delay of two months so he will be selling cheese for a longer time. After a nice weekend he wants to open his shop and sees that his entire shop window is stuck with advertising notes from his 'competitor'! "Hello customers, I am still in cheese business!"
The chances are very high that the cheese farmer will remove ALL advertisements from that other cheese farmer including the small one he placed himself.

The customers who came up with the idea know where to find the other cheese farmer. Customers who have missed all of this, because they did not come to this cheese farmer that often, find only butter in his shop, no other cheese can be found in the whole area, at least that they know off.
Of course I like to emphasize there is nothing wrong with butter!

So please be careful if you want to talk about the subject, for the aforementioned reasons this is not the right place for that.

Of course I could not have said anything about this, but what if one day you find the link is gone and for people who then read the closure message the choice between two alternatives is also gone.

We are allowed to make a choice, the Admin Team listened to us and that is something I really appreciate, thanks again for that possibility.
Please keep this in mind, please don't ruin this for another members / friends.

ETA: This message was certainly not intended to be pedantic, but was motivated by personal experience of being a bit too enthusiastic in recent past :cool:.

I was truly shocked to read that this forum will be read only soon and Eagle One said it all for me in a way I couldn’t, so thank you Eagle. I’ve got used to reading all of the knowledgeable and helpful posts on here and want to thank everyone. I’ve tried to share my knowledge of the game too when I could.
I’m not a great fan of Facebook and don’t want to join the megalithic social giant for various reasons so I was pleased to hear there’s an unofficial Township forum which I’ve joined a day or two ago.
However I’m very sad this forum is closing and wish you all well wherever you choose to post in future either on Facebook or the new forum.

Well, this maintenance is still in progress, for 2 or 3 days I think. Hope is nothing wrong and they will go on. I just join and before I can log again the forum was closed.
I try to look township FB even before, but to messy for me. Just articles with replays and no structure. If no forum will work there will be no place for me to look and share.:(

Don’t worry the other forum will be there, lease bear in mind it is new to the admins there as well and it takes a long time to arrange things and set everything up. They have assured us it will open again as soo as the work has been done..please be patient.

I for one DO NOT TRUST or use Facebook. Not since I heard of them changing terms of use years ago to their benefit WITHOUT telling anyone it changed. ( Plus I like a forum for me to read when I want, NOT an app poping up notifications frequently.)

I agree. Iam not one that lives and dies by Facebook. In fact I dont use it. I always felt ostracized because I didnt use it. I also felt left out of the events and other things related to Township that were on FB.

I agree with Rocky. I do not Facebook though I have 2 accounts. Facebook requires a cell number to link then pings it constantly throughout the day. I refused to tie a number to my personal Facebook account, so cannot even get in to see what my nieces and nephews are writing. This forum was GREAT. I am so sad to see it go but will get on and post if a new one pops up.

Are you aware that there is another township form that has opened. I don't mean the Facebook one but one that some of the people on here have opened, it is great, like this one. If you Google township forum you will find it.

I am sorry, I have to whole heartedly and fully disagree. I have been using computers since 1987, even ran a single line BBS back in the day. I have been using FB since its inception, and find it as a very poor replacement sub for a well run and well maintained forum. Good luck finding specific information which is difficult at best, and lord help you finding that information a second time should you need too.

Though that would explain why I could not post in the "to request change in user name post here" thread. I am hopeful, but won't hold my breath that they may see the support these forums have and change their mind. I have run vBulliten on a site before. So I know it can't be that big of a drain on resources

Hey there Daniel. I started in 1986 at 1200 baud on a fat Mac. Ran a BBS back then and a forum later during the Web's Golden Age. Facebook is not only a dreadfully incoherent communication platform but it is rife with security risks and privacy concerns. Playrix makes good use of FB with their eye candy and can attract more eyes, but their graphic sweetness attracts too much sour grapes by young, whining readers. Still, FB is the preferred choice for younger players and Playrix' growth potential is with them, not us "ancients." Mossy over to the Unofficial Township Forum and check it out. You may find it suitable. Cheers! :)

Ah, the DARPAnet and ListServ's and USEnet Newsgroups. Now there was some anarchy in action. FB reminds me a lot of those days, Flame Wars, Grammar Police, all the bad human interactions in one place.

I tried the Official FB Groups but I think I'll withdraw. FB is no place to try to post an explanation or a strategy intended to help people. It gets buried in the cacophony of short posts, either about themselves or town characters violating social distancing. Not a single thought longer than 100 characters (if that).

And by the time you've seen the same question about the regatta or an event or a co-op or whatever for the 1000th time you just give up wanting to answer. No way to point people to the perfectly reasonable answer you gave an hour before, it's under an avalanche of "here's my friend code" or "join my co-op" or pictures of some guy with a pot-bellied pig on a leash.

Nope, not a good repository of knowledge at all. Great for the "look at me" generation.

While you were doing that I was coding animated computer graphics (MIDAS) on an IBM 360 System with Hollerith cards and a 10" Tektronic 4010. (It was such a cute little green screen.)

Textronix 4010!!! I remember those. Back at the University of Pittsburgh (late 60's) I modified a CalComp plotter package to put out code for the 4010 instead. Then added "zoom" and other features using the two thumbnail wheels.

The Crystallography Department used it for Electron Bond diagrams. They used to take hours on the CalComp, seconds on the Textronicx, saved paper too.

System/360 was the 2nd sysstem I learned, cut my Hollerith teeth on an old 7090 :)

Oh boy ! Hollerith cards LOL You bring memory of learning Fortran in early 70s while studying math at University. My first contact with computers. Was dreaming of a personal machine at the time.

You just returned the favor of a flashback, Charlie. My first interactive CADD position introduced me to the tortuous wet ink pen plotter and how Murphy's Law made a pen run out of ink near the end of a final floor plan plot on Mylar. That thing was evil! Fortunately I had a dual Tektronic 4014 workstation I learned to ride and love like it was Trigger.

Without all the gory details (unless you want them), our CalComp was an off-line unit where we "spooled up" several jobs onto a MagTape for processing. There was a log so the operator knew how to label each plot for their eventual owner.

The application had a way to enter "comments" into the log that the operator would get. The most common comment was "Please Fill Ink Cartridge Before Starting My Plot" :)

My wife studied in the Math Department, FORTRAN was her language too, great for statistics and other nerdy math problems. After all, it's name means "FORmula TRANslator", has math written all over it :)

I was in the Computer Science Department, we went straight to Assembly / Machine Language. FORTRAN was an afterthought, just the last 2 weeks of the semester and never made it on the Final :)

I just joined. Like many I'm sure, I'm somewhat elderly, compromised by health conditions, and trying to stay out of the way. I've played, but not so intently, so many games. I just dedicated myself to this game, just to keep myself occupied - and well, it's just another sad piece of news which seems to be a daily occurrence. I'll check out the other forum. I have been enjoying the game so much, just to occupy my thoughts and time. I live up in the mountains, with no visitors - so, well... as they say - this sucks. Township was/is a unique game, to me anyway. I've enjoyed it, and will continue. Thanks for your original efforts, sorry you can not continue them.

I dislike it when companies only have facebook as a communication page. But it is a new trend apperently for companies to do this. Still wonder why since facebook is a mess and having a forum online doesn't cost a lot of money Then again since they themself don't show here it is less usefull since a lot of the time it is just use the ingame ticket system since we can't do anything here.

I also agree with the others comments about FB. I don’t have an account for the same reasons and have always felt that it was unfair that I was not able to have the same chance to participate in activities for special prizes. I was still learning how to post on here but have learned much just from reading what other people posted. So thank you all for your help. Due to my recent illnesses this game has helped keep my mind occupied. I wish you all well. JJ’s Township.
